GPs predict “fourfold increase” in work to administer expanded shingles vaccination
A major expansion to England’s shingles vaccination programme from this September could lead to a fourfold increase in work for the practices delivering it, local leaders have warned.The changes,1 announced by NHS England earlier this year as part of a package of amendments to the GP contract for 2023-24, will see the single dose Zostavax replaced with the two dose Shingrix vaccine, while the cohort of eligible patients will be expanded in line with recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.James Booth, medical director of Cambridgeshire Local Medical Committee, said that the changes had gone under the radar but would increase the general practice workload.He said, “Amidst the headlines around the imposition of the contract changes for 2023-24, it’s been easy to overlook some significant changes to the shingles vaccination programme that will have implications for practices.
