As a foundation doctor, I was relieved to hear the Labour party lay out plans for NHS workforce expansion.1 But I am concerned by the promise to double the number of medical school places (to 15 000) without mention of the pre-existing bottlenecks at entry to foundation and specialty training.This year, the foundation training programme was oversubscribed by 791 students, up year on year from 25 students in 2016.2 All students on the reserve list were eventually allocated a foundation post, later than their peers and often many miles away, but without forward thinking the direction of this trend is not likely to change.3While preparing to apply for core surgical training, I, like many others, have been disappointed to learn of the sudden addition of the multi-specialty recruitment assessment to the application pathway mere weeks before the recruitment window opens.
