bmj;379/oct14_1/o2454/FAF1faDavid John Austin grew up in Lytham St Annes. He attended St Thomas’ primary school and subsequently King Edwards’ Grammar school from the age of 7. He joined the school scout group, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and obtained his Queen’s scout award.From a young age, David wanted to become a doctor. True to character, he researched various medical schools and felt his best chance lay in Ireland. He heard he had a place to study medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin the day before he was due to begin training as an optician. He qualified in 1968.David did his intern year in Drogheda, Ireland, and subsequently worked at Birmingham Eye hospital for 10 years. During this time he had a short spell working in Canada.
