The prevalence of adrenal tumours in an unselected community population is 1.4%, a large Chinese study of more than 25 000 adults has found. However, 70% of these tumours are benign and non-functioning regardless of the patient’s age, meaning they did not make extra hormones. The prevalence of adrenal incidentaloma increased with age, from 0.2% in adults aged 18 to 25 up to 3.2% in adults over 65, according to the study published in Annals of Internal Medicine.1The detection of adrenal incidentalomas—incidentally found adrenal nodules that are not causing clinical symptoms—has increased in recent years.
