Pregnancy associated homicide and suicide are commonly preceded by mental health problems, substance use disorders, or intimate partner violence and every one should be considered preventable, say researchers.1Among women and girls aged 15 to 44 whose pregnancy status was known, 21% of homicides (660) and 9% of suicides (640) in the US were associated with pregnancy—a total of 1300 reported deaths, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System between 2008 and 2019.Firearms were used in two out of three homicides and one in three suicides, the data show.Among deaths in which circumstances were known, violence by an intimate partner was a factor not only in 57% of the homicides but also in 37% of the suicides, according to the research published in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the journal of the American College of Obsetricians and Gynecologists.Pregnant women in the US die by…
