Children give assent, not consent
In his letter criticising the title of the Education article “Consenting children aged under 18 for vaccination and treatment,” Jacobs rightly points out that because “consent” is an intransitive verb doctors cannot “consent” children.12Children can only give assent, supported by a parent or guardian, unless they are Gillick competent, when they can indeed give consent.
