Wellcome pledges to act after being branded “institutionally racist”

Wellcome is still an “institutionally racist organisation” and continues to fall short of its commitment to antiracism, both as a funder and as an employer, an external evaluation has found.1Apologising, Jeremy Farrar, Wellcome’s director, said, “Wellcome has played and continues to play a role in sustaining racism both in its own operations and in the wider research sector. I am sorry for the actions and inactions behind this and the hurt and disappointment these have caused.”He announced new measures to tackle inequity in research funding that would be introduced in the next year. These include setting up a dedicated funding stream available exclusively for researchers who are black and other people of colour.
