STAT+: How high? Prices for newly launched medicines rose 20% annually, analysis finds
Talk about inflation
Amid ongoing angst over prescription drug costs, a new analysis finds that the average launch price for a medicine skyrocketed 20% annually from $2,115 in 2008 to $180,007 in 2021. And even after adjusting for confidential rebates that drugmakers pay for favorable insurance coverage and changes in the characteristics of individual medicines, prices rose by 11% each year.
