Lyme Disease Is A Growing Concern For NYC’s Health Department, And They Are Taking Action
Recent statistics from the CDC have shown that Lyme disease is a growing problem across the country, with 300,000 new cases reported each year since 2013. In New York alone, over 3,000 cases are reported of Lyme disease annually. As a result, New York City is taking steps on Staten Island to combat the problem at the transmission level: ticks. Their newest program features bait boxes that attract rodents, who are the primary carriers of the Lyme disease bacteria, and which transmit it to the earliest life-phase of the tick, the nymphs. If the ticks can be killed at this stage, it is believed that the transmission of Lyme disease to human hosts will soon be stopped.
