Female doctors close the gender promotion gap but international male doctors fare less well
Women have closed the “gender promotion gap” since the covid-19 pandemic but male doctors from abroad are now less likely to be promoted to consultant level than their British trained male counterparts, research has found.Researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of Cyprus analysed data on 10 485 junior hospital doctors (grades 5-8) in all specialties who did not leave the NHS or transfer to a non-training or GP training route from March 2017 to February 2020 and from March 2020 to February 2023.The findings were presented at the British Academy of Management conference in Nottingham on 5 September.The researchers said that the pandemic generated a “career shock” with many consultants retiring, leading in turn to new opportunities for junior doctors to climb the career ladder.In the three years before the pandemic male British and non-British doctors were promoted in equal proportions—with around 43% of both groups who…
