Gender healthcare: Six new services for children and teenagers to open in England by 2026

Up to six new regional centres will open in England by 2026, in addition to the two opened this year, to provide gender healthcare services for children and teenagers under 18 years old, NHS England has announced.1The services will provide holistic healthcare for children and teenagers with gender incongruence and gender dysphoria, including screening for neurodevelopmental disorders and a mental health assessment.The model, recommended by the review chaired by Hilary Cass, past president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, will take into account young people’s wider health and care needs.2 The new centres will replace the service, now closed down, provided by the Tavistock Centre in London, which was criticised for too readily referring young people for puberty blockers.Two new regional services, led by London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, opened in April.
