Brain fog in hypothyroidism: recovery or dementia?

Papautsky describes developing brain fog on starting chemotherapy for breast cancer.1 Brain fog affected my life both before and after diagnosis of hypothyroidism, as is typically seen in the disease.2 I got the diagnosis in 1989, at the age of 38, and my doctor prescribed levothyroxine. Looking back, I see that the disease and symptoms started six or more years earlier, after having children.My doctor thought that I would recover after some months on levothyroxine monotherapy. This was not to happen. The cognitive impairment seemed to get even worse over the following years. My short term memory was bad. I was hypersensitive to light and sounds and to emotional impressions. Some days, thinking clearly was difficult, and I could hardly decode written text.
