Ronald Stout
bmj;385/jun21_4/q1364/FAF1faRonald Stout was born in December 1949 in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear. His father, Ron, worked in the mines as an electrician for the National Coal Board; his mother, Betty, as a legal secretary. He was baptised in the Independent Methodist church and here he learned a model of leadership through service to others, which was core to the Christian faith he kept throughout his life. He attended Durham Grammar School and gained a place at the University of Liverpool in 1968 to study medicine.Ron graduated in 1973, having met his wife-to-be Sue at university. They were married in 1974. He undertook house jobs in Liverpool and Canterbury, and a medical rotation in Kent, achieving his MRCP. In 1976 the couple moved to Manchester where Ron had been appointed as a senior house officer to the Christie Hospital having identified radiotherapy as his specialty.
