John Miell

After qualifying he studied endocrinology at three of the major international centres: St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, University Hospital Geneva, and King’s College London. After a period serving in the Royal Navy after university, which included a year-long post in Antarctica after the Falklands War, he returned to the UK and was awarded his doctorate of medicine in 1990. As a Wellcome advanced fellow he ran a large research group at King’s College, with a particular research interest in insulin-like growth factors, publishing hundreds of papers and articles on the subject.He was subsequently appointed as a consultant physician at University Hospital Lewisham in 1996. At Lewisham, he developed the endocrine services as well as leading the metabolic medicine unit, with eventual overall oversight for a number of departments as divisional director of medicine.He was also deeply passionate about medical education, and was appointed associate…
