NHS apologises to family of junior doctor who died by suicide
The head of medical training at NHS England has apologised to the family of a junior doctor who died by suicide after being wrongly told that she would have to undergo a further six months’ training at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.Vaishnavi Kumar was 35 when she died in June 2022, after writing in a note to her mother that the working environment at the hospital, run by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, “just broke me.” An inquest into her death heard that she had told her parents she felt belittled by consultants and began to struggle when she was told that her training at the hospital was being extended and that she would not be able to take up a new post elsewhere.In a letter to her family seen by the BBC, NHS England admitted that the extra training requirement was a mistake.
