Texas Supreme Court blocks permitted abortion for woman with non-viable pregnancy
On 8 December the Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocked permission for an abortion that a district court in Travis county had granted the day before. The lower court had issued a temporary restraining order to allow Kate Cox, a woman with a non-viable pregnancy, to have an abortion.12Texas attorney general Ken Paxton immediately appealed the lower court’s ruling to the Texas Supreme Court, which temporarily blocked the lower court ruling while it considered Paxton’s appeal. The supreme court did not say when it would issue a decision.3The lower court’s ruling would have permitted Cox to have an abortion by dilation and curettage and would have protected her obstetrician-gynaecologist Damla Karsan and anybody who helped Cox obtain the abortion from prosecution under Texas’ anti-abortion laws.45The Center for Reproductive Rights brought the case with Cox.
