After house jobs, he undertook national service in Gibraltar as the army anaesthetist.He was an anaesthetic registrar at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, where he met his future wife, Barbara, on her first day as a house officer.Stanley moved to general practice, first in Timperley, then in Chelford. He was on call “one in two” throughout his working life. He also continued to work two days a week as an anaesthetist.As a GP, he carried full resuscitation equipment in the boot of his car, including endotracheal tubes, oxygen, and intravenous fluids.Stanley was an excellent teacher to his trainees. In recognition of this he was one of the earliest invited members of the Royal College of GPs.Outside medicine, Stanley led a full social life, hosting parties, dinners, and other social occasions, always meticulously planned and packed with quizzes and…
