Police launch investigation into practice of former Belfast neurologist
Police have launched an investigation into the practice of Michael Watt, a former Belfast consultant neurologist who in 2018 was at the centre of Northern Ireland’s biggest patient recall.Watt worked as a consultant from 1996 to 2017 at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. He also had a private practice at the Hillsborough Private Clinic and the Ulster Independent Clinic.More than 5000 patients were recalled, many of whom were told that they had not been given the correct management plan or issued with the right prescription. A review last year by the Royal College of Physicians found that 44 patients who died under his care had “significant failures in their treatment,” with a high proportion of insecure diagnoses and patients who received inappropriate medicines.1Earlier this month Watt was struck off the UK medical register for deficient professional performance.
