Essex mental health inquiry will uncover more deaths, says chair

The UK’s first statutory inquiry into mental health deaths is expected to unearth many more deaths among Essex inpatients from 2000 to 2023 than the roughly 2000 deaths now under consideration, the inquiry’s chair has said.1On the opening day of the inquiry on 9 September, Kate Lampard said she found it “shocking” that the number of deaths might never be known, but she said that it would be “significantly in excess” of the 2000 or so being considered before the inquiry was converted into a statutory one with the power to compel evidence.The inquiry is focusing on Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and North East London NHS Foundation Trust, along with their predecessor bodies.
