Vyakara Kanaka

bmj;386/sep06_3/q1934/FAF1faVyakara Kanaka was born into a medical family in Chennai, India. Her father was the eminent surgeon KC Nambiar, and her brother trained as a urologist. Kanaka excelled at Doveton Corrie School and progressed to Stanley Medical College in Chennai. She was awarded the MBBS in 1975.Kanaka married Sridharan Anant Pillai in 1978. Pillai was an engineer, who was posted to Europe, living in Paris and Germany before settling in the UK. Kanaka initially worked in Stockton-on-Tees, and during her early years in the UK she trained in obstetrics and gynaecology. As time progressed, however, her interest in psychiatry developed. She completed a masters in psychiatry with her final topic being depression in chronic renal disease.
