His paternal grandmother was Jewish and despite her conversion to Christianity the family endured escalating persecution from the Nazis. His father, a lawyer, escaped to England when it became clear that he would be arrested. Henry’s mother organised Henry’s escape with his younger sister, Ursula, just before the outbreak of the second world war.Henry was taken in as a refugee at Durham School. He spoke no English but soon proved to be a gifted scholar, gaining a place at the University of Durham to read medicine. Following house jobs in Newcastle he did national service in the Royal Army Military Corps, supervising the evacuation of injured soldiers from Korea. He was posted to Wheatley Military Hospital in Oxfordshire, where he looked after servicemen with head injuries and saw the importance of neurorehabilitation for these patients.Following national service, Henry completed general surgical and…
