Maȷ Hulten
bmj;386/aug30_7/q1872/FAF1faMaj Hultén had a worldwide reputation in cytogenetics, having worked at its heart since the specialty’s inception. Maj was born in Lund, Sweden, into an academic family. At university in Stockholm and Lund she initially studied psychology and genetics before switching to medicine. After a doctorate on male meiosis she moved to the UK in 1975 to lead the cytogenetics service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Her research into meiosis and radiobiology continued, and her laboratory led the development and introduction of fluorescence in situ hybridisation and non-invasive polymerase chain reaction testing. She was honorary professor in medical genetics and reproductive genetics at the University of Birmingham from 1989 to 1999, then at Warwick University. She returned to Sweden in 2010 as professor emerita at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. She is survived by her daughter Sofia, an artist in Berlin; granddaughter Alva; and foster children Andrew and Rebecca.
