STAT+: Continuous glucose monitoring for the masses is here. Are we ready for it?

NEW YORK — Glucose tracking is the future, Dexcom executives gushed at a glitzy launch event for their new, over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor on Wednesday evening. Surrounded by champagne, new celebrity ambassador and “Parks and Rec” actress Retta, and a mini-pickleball court, CEO Kevin Sayer declared victory.  

“Dexcom has literally created an industry, and now it’s time to create a much broader revolution in health care,” Sayer told attendees. 

Over the past 25 years, continuous glucose monitors have changed the shape of diabetes care. The devices, which measure blood glucose using a sensor that pierces the very top layer of skin, have helped people with type 1 diabetes avoid life-threatening dips at night, and improved blood glucose control for insulin-using diabetes patients.
