Expanding London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone has improved air quality, report finds
The expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to outer London has been highly effective in reducing the proportion and number of older, more polluting vehicles in Greater London, a report by the Greater London Authority has found.1The ULEZ expansion has also been associated with a fall in air pollutants and better air quality in outer London, said the report.The zone was expanded to outer London on 29 August 2023, and by February 2024 96.2% of all vehicles driven in the expanded zone were ULEZ compliant—up from 90.9% in June 2023.
