Leaders of NHS trusts in England have criticised regulatory requirements as “unrealistic” and “detached from reality,” in the face of continuing pressures on finances, performance, and staffing.The latest annual survey on regulation and oversight from NHS Providers, the membership organisation for NHS hospital, mental health, community, and ambulance services, said there was duplication of functions and requests across the system, especially between integrated care boards (ICBs) and NHS England.1NHS Providers’ report, A Pivotal Moment for Regulation, also said that trust leaders were sceptical about the Care Quality Commission’s credibility and objectivity.Its survey was carried out during April and May, with responses from 122 trusts, accounting for 58% of the provider sector and representing all regions and trust types.
