bmj;386/aug08_17/q1740/FAF1faLawrence Mascarenhas was a distinguished obstetrician, gynaecologist, minimal access surgeon, and educationalist who made an important contribution to women’s health and medical education. He was internationally recognised for his expertise in obstetric and gynaecological surgery, particularly in managing complex cases involving invasive placentas.Lawrence graduated in 1986 with first class honours from François Rabelais University in Tours, France, after being awarded a French government scholarship. He began his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Cochin Port Royal Maternity Hospital in Paris. He then trained in some of the UK’s top institutions including the John Radcliffe Hospital, Birmingham Women’s Hospital, and Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He completed his general specialist accreditation in 1996.In 1998 he completed Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) subspecialist accreditation in reproductive medicine and surgery at Addenbrooke’s and the Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic.
