David George Pratt
bmj;386/aug08_23/q1745/FAF1faDavid was born in London in 1935 and studied languages at A level, winning a travel scholarship to Bordeaux University. He spent his national service at the Joint Services School for Linguists where he learnt Russian. When his mother became unwell, David took her to St Thomas’ Hospital where she was diagnosed with leukaemia. This experience sparked his interest in studying medicine. He gained a place on the first MB course at St Thomas’, winning prizes and being appointed to several house and registrar jobs at the hospital.He met me—Susie—when I was a fourth year Nightingale nurse. We married in 1966 and enjoyed 58 happy years together. We spent a year travelling around India in 1970 with our two small children, seeing a great deal of rural medicine.
