UN fires nine staff members over potential involvement in 7 October Hamas attack on Israel

The United Nations has said it will be terminating contracts with nine staff members who have been working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), after an investigation found they may have been involved in the Hamas led attacks on Israel on 7 October.1The investigation by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) follows accusations made by Israel last year that several UNRWA staff had taken part in the attacks that killed 1200 people and saw another 250 taken hostage.While OIOS was “not able to independently authenticate information used by Israel to support the allegations,” its own investigation of 19 accused staff found evidence suggesting nine “may have been involved in the 7 October attacks.”UNRWA commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini said, “They cannot work for UNRWA. All contracts of these staff members will be terminated in the interest of the agency.”…
