Extra {pound}82m allows practices in England to hire 1000 more new GPs this year

The government has set out plans to allow general practices in England to hire 1000 more doctors this year through the additional roles reimbursement scheme (ARRS).1Previously, practices were only permitted to hire non-medical support staff through the ARRS through primary care networks, but the new government has opted to remove the red tape and expand the scheme to cover doctors by adding £82m to the ARRS fund.As a result, the government said newly qualified GPs who could otherwise have been without a job this summer can be recruited into the NHS.The Department of Health and Social Care said the expansion had been “hard fought” by the BMA, Royal College of GPs (RCGP), and a petition with over 11 000 signatures.
