Ban on puberty blockers is lawful, rules High Court judge

Emergency legislation banning the supply of puberty blockers in England, Scotland, and Wales to under 18s is lawful, a High Court judge has ruled.1The emergency order bans the sale or supply of the drugs prescribed by private UK prescribers for gender incongruence or dysphoria in under 18s not already taking them and the sale and supply of the drugs against prescriptions from the European Economic Area or Switzerland.The previous Conservative government introduced the order in late May in response to the recommendations of the Cass review on gender identity services,2 which highlighted the lack of evidence for the use of puberty blockers and recommended that they should not be used outside clinical trials.The order came into force on 3 June and is due to expire on 2 September 2024.
