bmj;386/jul30_1/q1675/FAF1faWhen he was just 13 Mukundrai Kris Jasani was forced to assume responsibility for his six younger siblings when his mother died unexpectedly. Despite this enormous burden he completed his schooling at Duke of Gloucester School in Nairobi, Kenya, passing A levels with excellent grades. This enabled him to study medicine in the UK, supported by a bursary from the Kenyan government and a loan from local benefactors.He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating first in his year in 1955. This was an immense achievement for someone from his humble background. The news of his success spread, and local entrepreneurs offered to help him set up and run a private clinic.The H2N2 flu virus pandemic of 1957 to 1959 affected the Jasani family badly, however, and his sister developed debilitating bilateral juvenile idiopathic arthritis affecting the hip joint.
