My goal for the independent investigation into the performance of the health service in England
When Wes Streeting, the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, asked me to lead a review of the NHS, I was delighted to help. The NHS is a great British institution, which I have had the honour to work in for over 30 years as a surgeon.I was also delighted because of the process that the new government has adopted. As I said when the review was announced, every clinician and every patient knows that the first step to tackling any health problem is a proper diagnosis.1 Improving the NHS can only begin with an honest appraisal of the current state of the health service.
