Tackling research misconduct
Trust in academic research is essential if findings are to benefit citizens, society, and the environment. Trust must be earnt through transparency and having the right checks and balances in place.12 One of the likely drivers of trust and distrust in research is the way research institutes, publishers, and funders respond to allegations of research misconduct. So the recent report by the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) Barriers to Investigating and Reporting Research Misconduct is important.3The report encourages early reporting of potential research misconduct in all academic disciplines and makes proposals to simplify the investigation process, improve collaboration between stakeholders, and increase the consistency of responses to allegations.
