She attributed much of her professional success to her personal struggles.John Roberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up in Ferguson, Missouri—two cities of great tension as America struggled for racial integration. As John witnessed those struggles, he fought to integrate his own gender identity, a fight described in The BMJ in 2004.1John began his career by flunking out of the University of Missouri, spending more time protesting the Vietnam War than attending classes. Reforming, he discovered a passion for learning and leadership in a community college in Nebraska and became a journalist, specialising in healthcare and focusing on the complex and costly dilemmas at the end of life.
