CQC admits mistakes in rollout of new regulatory approach
The Care Quality Commission’s new interim chief executive has admitted that the regulator “got things wrong” in the implementation of its new regulatory approach. Kate Terroni wrote to providers on 15 July to apologise.1 “I know that the changes we’ve delivered so far are not what we promised,” she wrote. “It’s made things more difficult than they should be. We’re not where we want to be, and we’re determined to put things right.”The CQC has announced urgent and immediate areas of action, including more assessments and inspections, increased support for providers, and fixing and improving the provider portal.The CQC’s single assessment framework was announced in 2021 to provide a single vision of quality for all health and social care providers across England.2 The changes involved moving away from regular inspections to more frequent assessments by reviewing data from various sources.
