Ara Darzi is charged with uncovering “hard truths” of NHS performance
The new health and social care secretary, Wes Streeting, has appointed Ara Darzi to lead an independent review of NHS performance in England. The surgeon and former Labour health minister has been asked to provide a “raw and frank assessment” of the state of the health service that will help steer Labour’s forthcoming 10 year plan for the NHS, Streeting said.Darzi previously carried out a review of the NHS in 2008, which led to the creation of GP led polyclinics across England. His latest report will cover key areas such as waiting times and access and is expected to report to the Department of Health and Social Care in September.Streeting said, “Anyone who works in or uses the NHS can see it is broken.
