Improve working conditions or risk losing senior doctors, new government is warned
Three top royal medical colleges, representing 60 000 doctors, have warned the new Labour government that it must act urgently to improve doctors’ working conditions or risk losing critical senior staff from the NHS.In the 2023 UK consultant physician workforce census—a collaboration between the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow—almost half of the consultants surveyed (47%) reported losing enjoyment in their job in the past year.1 Workload, poor IT, and staff vacancies were cited as the top three reasons.Nearly two in five consultants (39%) reported having an excessive workload almost all or most of the time, while nearly one in five (18%) said that they almost never felt in control of their workload.
