They lived above the family charcuterie business. Maurice’s father (also Maurice) was from Nantes in France, and his mother Rosalie was born in Jersey of French parents, and they maintained their ties to the French mainland.From an early age Maurice was drawn to biology. His was initially drawn to botany before deciding he wanted to study medicine. He joined the St John Ambulance service in his youth and further developed his interest in health and medicine.
