Over 171 000 American women travelled out of state for abortions last year
More than 171 000 US women travelled from their home state to get an abortion in 2023, reports the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organisation focusing on sexual and reproductive health.1The institute estimates there were more than one million abortions performed by healthcare providers in 2023, the first full year since the Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to an abortion.2 Since then about half of the 50 US states have banned or severely restricted abortions.The Guttmacher study showed that many more women were travelling out of state and travelling further to receive abortions or to get medication abortion pills than in the past.
