James Burns
bmj;385/jun21_2/q1363/FAF1faJames (Jim) Burns was born in 1937 in Liverpool. He had a difficult early life and was placed in St Edward’s Orphanage by the time he was 8. Despite these difficulties, he overcame many challenges, was noticed to be very bright, and encouraged in his studies. He studied medicine at the University of Liverpool, qualifying in 1961. He started as a house surgeon at Walton Hospital and progressed through the ranks in pathology. In 1973 he and his beloved family moved to Canada where he was a consultant histopathologist at Saint John General Hospital until 1978. He was then appointed as a consultant histopathologist at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham and brought the family back to the UK.
