During his early career as a research assistant and fellow in the department of therapeutics at Aberdeen University his interests were hypertension, diuretic therapy, cardiogenic shock, and renal calculi.He entered general practice in 1969 and helped develop the Rubislaw Place Medical Group in Aberdeen. He became a trainer at the practice in 1975 and during his career held many additional roles in his pursuit of the development of medical education, including national coordinator for the higher professional training project (Scottish Council PGMDE, NES), associate regional adviser (CME Grampian), GP appraiser (Grampian), accreditation panel member (Royal College of GPs UK), and recertification fellow (RCGP UK).
