US doctors received more than $12bn in industry payments between 2013 and 2022, study shows

Some 57% of US doctors received more than $12bn in payments related to medical drugs or devices from manufacturers between 2013 and 2022, an analysis has found.1 “Despite evidence that financial conflicts of interest may influence physician prescribing and may damage patients’ trust in medical professionals, such payments remain pervasive,” says the letter in JAMA.Between August 2013 and 2022 US drug and device manufacturers made more than 85 million payments with a total value of $12.13bn to 826 313 of the 1 445 944 eligible doctors in the US. Orthopaedic surgeons received the largest total sum of payments, at $1.36bn. They were followed by neurologists and psychiatrists, who received $1.32bn, and cardiologists, who got $1.29bn.While the median payment to doctors was only $48, payments to the top 0.1% of doctors were much higher and varied by specialty.
