bmj;384/mar22_8/q697/FAF1faJane Higson was born in Stockton-on-Tees. Her parents were both chemistry graduates and she followed in her mother’s footsteps to Leeds University. There, Jane met her future husband, Phil Mitchell, who was in the same year. They qualified in 1954 and married in 1956.Jane undertook house jobs in Leeds and Northallerton and then worked with Phil in Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe. Phil became a principal in Epworth in 1958, and from 1964 he and Jane ran the practice together for five years until an additional partner joined. Jane also undertook clinical assistant sessions in anaesthesia at Scunthorpe General Hospital. She continued to work part time in the growing practice until the couple’s retirement in 1990.During this time, Jane raised three boys and took an active part in the local community.
