Nancy Patricia McLean
bmj;384/feb23_8/q391/FAF1faNancy Patricia Cruikshank met her future husband, Ken McLean, in Freshers’ Week. She lost a year of university study due to tuberculosis. Her father, Robert, was a professor of bacteriology who was an early investigator of streptomycin, isoniazid, and drug resistance in tuberculosis. On his encouragement she was treated with novel (and later proved correct) combinations of early anti-tuberculosis drugs and made a full recovery. Nancy worked as locum GP for four years before stepping back to bring up her family. She returned to work in occupational health and was a GP partner with Ken until she retired in 1992. She was in great demand as the only female GP in the practice and known by staff and patients as Doctor Nancy. She shared Ken’s love of travel and company into their late 80. Predeceased by Ken and their daughter, Catriona, she leaves two sons—Alan and Alasdair—and four grandchildren.
