William Ian Jones
bmj;384/feb16_10/q197/FAF1faWilliam “Ian” Jones was born in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, and studied medicine in Cardiff. He did two years of national service in Singapore, where his biggest challenge was the vaccination programme that followed an outbreak of smallpox.His career in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) medicine began under the guidance of Don Harrison at the Royal National Throat, Nose, and Ear Hospital, where he earned his fellowship in 1964. He continued to work in London and was then seconded for 15 months as a researcher and lecturer to Kingston University, Jamaica, between December 1965 and spring 1967. On returning to the UK he secured a consultant post in south Wales at Singleton Hospital, Swansea, and Prince Phillip Hospital, Llanelli.
