Thomas George Parks
bmj;384/feb09_9/q331/FAF1faAfter a specialist fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital, George Parks was appointed consultant surgeon in Armagh City and South Tyrone Hospital in 1970, before taking up position as senior lecturer and consultant surgeon at the Royal Victoria and Belfast City hospitals in 1971. He was subsequently promoted to reader and then professor of surgical science in 1982. He developed the first colorectal specialist unit in Northern Ireland, contributed hugely to undergraduate academic surgery, established a large research portfolio, and had significant roles in postgraduate education and training of surgeons in Northern Ireland.
