ADHD: how can the NHS deliver better provision?
We are pleased that the conference of local medical committees carried Lucy Clement’s motion calling for better provision of services for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in England.1 We hope the same applies to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.We support primary care receiving resources (including access to specialist advice in case of any problems) to perform monitoring and annual reviews, as described in the motion. But NHS capacity for diagnostic assessments is substantially lacking, which might encourage patients to seek private healthcare or compromise on the quality of assessments. A national “approved provider” list might have merit but will not expand capacity.The UK Adult ADHD Network (https://www.ukaan.org/) has suggested ways of mainstreaming assessment to tackle capacity2 and has produced a consensus on what constitutes a high quality assessment.3 We now need government funding and appropriate contractual frameworks.
