STIs: Rise in young people follows decade of cuts to sexual health service, MPs hear
A government strategy on sexual health is needed to tackle the rising incidence of sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and syphilis among young people, senior health leaders have told MPs.England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, and the president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), Claire Dewsnap, called for a new strategy on the running of sexual health services in light of changes in the past decade, such as more online consultations. They were giving evidence to the 24 January hearing of the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee on the prevalence of STIs among young people.In 2022 the UK saw the highest number of gonorrhoea diagnoses on record, while syphilis diagnoses were the highest since 1948. The people most likely to have an STI diagnosis were those aged 15 to 24, with over 400 diagnoses made each day among young people that year.1Close…
