UK’s National Screening Committee endorses digital pathology for cancer screening

The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) has backed the use of digital pathology as an alternative to light microscopy for the review of cancer screening histopathology slides.1Digital pathology enables pathologists to review glass histopathology slides digitally on a computer screen rather than through a microscope.The UK NSC has emphasised that its endorsement does not mean that digital pathology must be used but simply that it can be used. The committee also advised that an audit of the use of this technology should be carried out in the future to check for any differences in results between the approaches.The endorsement comes after a health technology assessment study involving more than 2000 cases at six NHS sites found that pathologists provided equivalent results using both methods.2 The findings were then reviewed by 31 stakeholders, including pathologists, charities, and the Royal College of Pathologists, during the consultation process.3In its consultation response the…
