Menopause: UK approves daily pill for hot flushes

A new once daily, non-hormonal pill that reduces hot flushes and night sweats caused by menopause has been approved by the UK’s drugs regulator.12Fezolinetant, marketed as Veoza, has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause.The drug’s manufacturer, Astellas, has said the pill will be available on prescription through private services from January. It is also applying for approval from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to enable access in the NHS.The drug, approved by the European Commission last week and by the US Food and Drug Administration in May,34 works by blocking neurokinin B, a protein involved in regulating body temperature.The efficacy of fezolinetant has been tested through two 12 week randomised controlled phase 3 trials, involving a total of 1022 postmenopausal women.
